Bake these adorable Valentine Heart Cookies and package them in decorative cellophane bags to give away to loved ones.

Valentine Heart Cookies

Makes about 3½ dozen
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Piped Meringue Frosting (recipe follows)
- Meringue Frosting (recipe follows)
- Sugar sprinkles
- Nonpareils
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and vanilla with a mixer at medium speed until fluffy. Add eggs, one at time, beating well after each addition.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating until combined. Wrap dough in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or for up to 3 days.
- Preheat oven to 350°. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- On a heavily floured surface, roll dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut dough using heart-shaped cookie cutters, and place on prepared pans.
- Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Let cool on pans for 2 minutes. Remove from pans, and let cool completely on wire racks.
- Spoon Piped Meringue Frosting into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip. Pipe a heart shape onto cookies near edge to create a border. Let stand for at least 2 hours or until frosting is dry.
- Using the back of a spoon or a small clean paint brush, paint cookies inside border with Meringue Frosting. Let stand for at least 2 hours or until frosting is dry.
- Pipe desired lines and shapes onto cookies with Piped Meringue Frosting, and cover with sugar sprinkles and nonpareils while frosting is still wet. Let stand for at least 2 hours or until frosting is dry. Store in airtight containers for up to 5 days.

Piped Meringue Frosting

Ingredients
- ¼ cup cold water
- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- Assorted paste food coloring
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, beat ¼ cup cold water and meringue powder with a mixer at medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until smooth (frosting will be thick). Divide among small bowls, and tint as desired with food coloring.

- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- Assorted paste food coloring

- In a small bowl, whisk together ¼ cup cold water and meringue powder until foamy. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar, whisking until smooth. Divide among small bowls, and tint as desired with food coloring.
