Sangria Granita

  1. 2 cups water
  2. 1 cup sugar
  3. 2 cups red wine
  4. 1/2 cup orange juice
  5. 2 tablespoons brandy
  6. 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
  7. 1/2 orange, thinly sliced
  8. 6 whole cloves
  9. 1 cinnamon stick
  10. Garnish: orange slices
  1. In a small saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; reduce heat, and simmer, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine wine, orange juice, brandy, lemon slices, orange slices, cloves, and cinnamon stick; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and let stand for 30 minutes. Strain mixture, discarding solids.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine sugar mixture and wine mixture. Pour into an 11x7-inch baking dish. Cover and freeze for at least 8 hours or until firm. Scrape mixture with a fork until fluffy. Garnish with orange slices, if desired.
  1. For a nonalcoholic version, substitute grape juice for wine and omit brandy.
